Vancouver Shipyards, based in North Vancouver, has been very busy working on some exciting projects. We continue to make progress on two 174m long Joint Support Ships (JSS) for the Royal Canadian Navy – the largest ships ever built in Canada! We are working towards delivery of an Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel (OOSV) for the Canadian Coast Guard, and will be starting construction later this year of the first heavy Polar Icebreaker built in Canada for over 50 years.
Following that we have several Multi-Purpose Vessels that are currently designing for construction in years to come. These projects bring long-term job stability on some of the most exciting and significant shipbuilding opportunities in the world.
As a Metal Fabricator, you will perform a variety of tasks throughout the production process, while upholding Seaspan’s Core Values of Safety, Care, Efficiency and Accountability. You will have an opportunity to develop new skills including specialized fabrication and forming specific to shipbuilding industry using some of the most state-of-art shipbuilding equipment and processes in the world.

Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Red Seal Metal Fabrication, and/or Red Seal Boilermaker, and/or 5+ years of fabrication experience
- CWB all position FCAW Tacking Ticket preferred
- ITA Marine Fitter Endorsement ideal
- Demonstrated passion for safety and environmental stewardship
- Good communication skills both written and verbal in the English language
- Ability to work positively in a team environment
- Demonstrated proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and drawings
- Demonstrated proficiency at layout and fabrication of metal structural parts such as plates, bulkheads, and frames
- Demonstrated proficiency in using jacks, turnbuckles, and fairing tools
- Need to be able to work in a construction environment involving confined spaces, working at heights, physical labour, and various weather conditions
- Must be flexible and be able to work all shifts
- Advanced skills: Demonstrated proficiency in Grand Block consolidations with a good understanding of critical ships datums
This is a Union role with Marine & Shipbuilders - Local 506 and offers an excellent health, welfare & pension package after the completion of 480 hours. The Red Seal Journeyperson hourly rate is $54.29 p/hr. If you have 5+ years of fabrication experience and do not have a certification, you will earn $46.15 p/hr. Any overtime is double time.
Since this role requires on-site work in North Vancouver, BC, we offer a Living Away From Home allowance of $225 per day worked if you do not reside within the Vancouver area and are a Red Seal Journeyperson.

This position may involve defense articles and/or technical data regulated by the U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (“ITAR”) and the U.S. Arms Export Control Act. In compliance with ITAR, the successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance through the Canadian Controlled Goods Program as regulated by the Controlled Goods Regulations and Defense Production Act. The successful candidate will be required to maintain their security clearance throughout their employment in this position.
